Sodium alginate (SA)was commonly used as the printing paste in reactive dye printing, butstrong activity reactive dyes reactived with secondary hydroxyl on the sodium alginate molecule indeep printing,and the paste was difficult to remove,then the printing fabric had bad handle. Thisproblem impacted the performance of fabric. Sodium alginate was modified by two types ofmodifiers which blocked activity hydroxyl of SA. The printing performances of modified pastewere studied at the conditions of high concerntration of reactive dyes with strong activity.Sulfonated alginate paste (HSA) was obtained by sulfonating SA with the use of chlorosulfonicacid.HSA was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy (FTIR),and the performances of HSA wereanalysised by X-ray diffraction spectrum (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).Thesynthesis conditions of the target product were optimized. The reactivity between reactive dyes andthe paste was determined by TLC,and the rheological properties and printing performance of HSApaste were tested. The results showed that: the reactivity of paste HSA with reactive black KN-Bwas lower than SA. Compared with the SA, compatibility to chemcial additives of HSA wasbetter,but storage stability and hydrability of HSA decreased. De-paste ratio of silk and cotton withHSA was respectively increased by7.1%and10%, the color yield rasied by2.6%and0.4%.Contour definition of HSA printing was poorer than that with SA printing,so HSA paste wasblended with SA,and then the rheological behavior and printing properties of blending paste weretested. The results showed that: when the HSA/SA was50:50, de-paste ratio of silk and cotton wasrespectively increased by6.3%and9%, the color yield rasied by2%and0.3%compared with thatof SA. The reactivity with reactive black KN-B of mix paste was lower that of SA,and contourdefinition of mix paste was good.Grafted alginate paste (GSA) was obtained by grafting SA with the use of acrylic acid.Thebasic properties and printing performances of GSA were studied. The results showed that: Thereactivity with reactive black KN-B of GSA paste was lower that of SA. Compared with the SA,GSA paste had better hydrability and storage stability, but poorer compatibility to chemcialadditives,and de-paste ratio of silk and cotton was respectively increased by5%and3%, the coloryield rasied by6%and1.3%.Contour definition of GSA was better than that of SA. The application performance of GSA, SA and HSA were comparised.The resoults showedthat the reactivity between paste and high concentration of reactive dye decreased by modificating.The reactivity of HSA and GSA was lower than that of SA. De-paste ratio and K/S value of HSAand GSA were higher than those of SA. GSA had the most excellent hydrability,and GSA hadhigher storage stability than HSA and SA. HSA had best compatibility to chemcial additives,andGSA had higher contour definition than HSA and SA.
