Magnetic composites is made by matrix material and magnetic functional materials, In this paper, magnetic attapulgite and magnetic activated carbon were synthesised respectively, then the conceptual design of "Preparation of magnetic activated carbon by chemical precipitation process" were proposed.Part I:Magnetic attapulgite was prepared by in-situ synthesis method. The factors that which affect the magnetic performance in the preparation process were optimized by orthogonal design, such as reaction temperature, reaction time, divalent iron (Fe2+) concentration, and the calcination temperature of activation treatment. The results show that the primary and secondary sequences which affect the magnetic performance of the product are reaction temperature> reaction time> divalent iron (Fe2+) concentration>calcination temperature of activation treatment.Part II:After pre-treated by nitric acid solution, activated carbon was modified with y-Fe2O3 nano-particles, using chemical co-precipitation technique and carboxylic acid vapor treatment technique respectively. Magnetic composites (MAC-1 and MAC-2) obtained were characterized by Fourier Transform Infra Red spectroscopy (IR), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). Then the two materials were used to adsorb p-nitrophenol (PNP) in water. The equilibrium data fitted the Langmuir sorption isotherms well, and the maximum adsorption capacities were found to be 125 mg-g-1 and 58.4 mg-g-1 respectively.Part III:The conceptual design of "Preparation of magnetic activated carbon by chemical precipitation process" was proposed.
