In recent years, the industry of architectural coatings in China has developed rapidly. The continuous development of China's economic construction in the same time encourages the implementation of sustainable strategies, which makes people increase awareness of natural environment. The industry of architectural coatings also followed strong proponent of sustainable development strategies, which makes environmentally friendly architectural coatings show an encouraging prospect for the development of architectural coatings research and application to provide a large number of favorable social foundation. A defined exterior wall insulation coating can effectively reduce the temperature of the surface and internal, ease the changes of the surface temperature, so it has a good protective effect on the building, and has important significant on improving living and working environment and conservation energy. Studying and development of environmentally friendly insulation of exterior wall coating has great economic, environmental and social benefits.In this paper, the selected and investigated raw materials were on the basement of theory of understanding the material in the light and heat reflection, absorption and radiation, from the basic nature of the starting materials. Combined with actual conditions in China, considering environmental protection and insulation requirements, rational use of straw ash, a kind of thermal insulation material as a functional filler coating preparation of straw-based green coating was investigated. A series of experiments focused on the base stock, additives, types, amount and ratio of pigments and fillers, pigment to base stock ratio on the thermal insulation properties of coating to determine the environmental straw optimal insulation coating formulations, and the insulation and other properties were also studied.We developed the insulating properties of straw-based green coating mainly affected by the pigments and fillers, less affected by the film forming. The higher the refractive index white pigment, the higher the reflectivity of the coating, under the same conditions, the lower the surface temperature, when it joined the coating, which could improved the properties of thermal-insulated coating. The advantage of rutile titanium dioxide is most obvious in a series of white pigment, the highest refractive index of rutile titanium dioxide, therefore rutile titanium dioxide is the configuration of exterior wall insulation coating of the most important in the selection of the white pigment. Straw ash mixed with rutile titanium dioxide complement made the heat insulation coating significantly improve. Talc, kaolin content on the thermal properties of coatings was very small by replacing part of refraction of barium sulfate rate of titanium dioxide pigment of the prepared coating with excellent insulation properties, and lower product costs. The exterior walls of straw-based green coating showed a solar heat reflectivity of 91.08%, with good insulation effect of reflection.
