Magnesium alloy can be widely used in many aspects because of its considerableproperties, such as low density, high specific intensity, corrosion resistance dimensionalstability, wear-resistant recyclable, etc. It has been paid great attention in aerospace, portable electrical products, and automobile industry etc. The connection technology cangreatly improve the application of the new material. This paper has studied the weldingproperties of magnesium alloy using YAG laser.AZ91 magnesium alloy, which is made of the shells of electrical products, has beenselected as welding material. YAG laser is used as welding equipment. Welding qualitywhich is affected by laser parameters is discussed by orthogonal test. Welding properties ofAZ91 magnesium alloy is researched by the metallographic examination, texture andphase analysis, hardness test, stress-strain test, etc. And the differences of the weld, whichcontains texture and phase, composition, hardness and defects, in single layer welding anddual layers welding are compared. The result shows weld-width in two sides increases as the current, pulse-width, andfrequency of laser increase. But it shrinks when velocity of welding increase. The hardnessincreases as the current increase, decreases when the length to the welding centre increases. The fusion efficiency is the best when the defocus amount is zero, meanwhile, the shapeof the boundary is suitable. Good welding connections can be acquired by choosing properparameters of YAG laser when welding. It has been seen that the major texture in weld isequiaxed grains; the fusion line is clear; no considerable heat-effect zone; less defects; themicroscopy hardness and the specific intensity are higher than welding material.
