The wellbore instability of complex water-sensitive formation is an important technical problem which has plagued people. Oil-based drilling fluid is an effective means to solve such problems. However, because of its high cost, high incidence of lost circulation, low penetration rate, a great impact on fluorographic logging and the environment, people are forced to seek a high performance water-based drilling fluid which can provide excellent performance without the limitations. In recent years, a high-performance water-based drilling fluid has been developed in foreign countries, which can duplicate oil-based mud performance and has some advantages as low cost, low environmental impact, etc.The key of high performance and strong inhibition water-based drilling fluid technology is to develop an excellent shale inhibitor. In this paper, based on the research of literature, combined with knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry and shale inhibition mechanism, an organic amine inhibitor development were developed, and the synthesized samples were evaluated and optimized using cuttings rolling recovery experiments, the linear expansion test, rheological experiments, flocculation test, immersion test, etc. The results show that the organic amine inhibitor JAY-4 has the best performance, which meet the design requirements.Combined with the newly developed product, the other major treatment agents of highly inhibitive water-based drilling fluid were screened by a large number of optimization experiments in this paper. A new type of organic amine highly inhibitive water-based drilling fluid system was developed eventually, and which has been conducted in field application.The laboratory and field application results show that this system has excellent performance, which not only has excellent inhibition, but also has good lubrication and is beneficial to reservoir protection, and can reduce the occurrence of downhole, drilling time, the total cost of drilling etc.
