The reaction of butene hydration is reversible and heterogeneous, because liquid-liquid phases do not solve with each other so that the reaction rate is much slowly. The phase transfer catalyst (PTC) can promote the mutualsolubility of reactans, thus improving the reaction rate.This study aims to screen out suitable PTC which can be used for promoting the direct hydration of butene by computer simulation and experiments. The results show that PTC-05 can observably improve the one-way conversion of butene. The data of liquid-liquid equilibrium with PTC have been determined and the results show that PTC exists mainly in water phase.The apparent kinetics and mechanism is studied preliminarily. Through the process study of PTC, the influence of reaction parameters on the hydration of butene was investigated and the process parameters were optimized. The reasonable concentration of PTC is 3.0wt% around. Empirical models of one-way conversion and time space yield were established, and analogue computation has made to the effects of the parameters on hydration of butene.The engineering study shows that PTC has no negative influence on product and following-up processes, and it is recyclable with its advantages of stability and little loss. The results show that PTC can observably improve the one-way conversion of butene, and it is easy to operate. The process is simple and low costs, so it has bright prospect of industrialization.
