The attraction of ionic liquids (ILs) lies in their remarkable set of properties when compared to conventional solvents. In recent years, considerable attention has been focused on the use of ionic liquids as novel reaction media or soft functional materials. There are many reports concerning their applications in separation process, synthesis and material chemistry. Our researches mainly concentrated upon the synthesis of room temperature ionic liquids and the application of ionic liquids as new reaction media in cyanation of aryl iodides, the synthesis of new chiral ionic liquids from natural amino acids, the synthesis of sulfoindolyl alkyl acids. The present thesis consists of four main parts:In chapter one, a brief history of the development of ionic liquids is reviewed. Based on the data of literatures related to ionic liquids from 2000 to 2009, especially in the last three years, the concept, category, properties, preparation methods and application of ionic liquids are described. The trends for their future of ionic liquids are also prospected. In addition, the problems and solutions of ionic liquids in the process of development have been discussed. In chapter two, study on the synthesis of room temperature ionic liquids and the applications of ionic liquids as new reaction media in cyanation of aryl iodides are described. Six kinds of room temperature ionic liquids have been synthesized from N-methylimidazole, pyridine, 1-chlorobutane, 1-bromobutane and others raw materials. The cyanation behavior of aryl iodides was studied under different conditions in ionic liquids. In chapter three, study on the synthesis of new chiral ionic liquids from natural amino acids is depictted. Four kinds of new chiral ionic liquids have been synthesized from natural amino acids, such as L-alanine, L-valine, L-methionine and L-phenylalanine, through Debus imidazole synthesis, esterification, reduction and alkylation reaction. In chapter four: study on the synthesis of sulfoindolyl alkyl acids is specified. Four kinds of sulfoindolyl alkyl acids have been synthesized with acetylethylacetate, 2-methylacet-oacetate, ethyl 6-bromohexanoate, methyl 2-bromoacetate and p-hydrazinobenzene-sulforic acid as raw materials, through nucleophilic substitution, saponification, acidification, decarboxylation and Fischer indole cyclization reaction. In summary, 12 kinds of compounds, including intermediates and target products, were firstly synthesized.
