Surface-contact grinding is one of precision machining ways and it is widely used in various sectors of national economy. At present, the numerous researches of surface-contact grinding remain in the aspect of grinding equipment and grinding tools selection and optimization of process parameters. Theoretical research is not only less, but also most scholars believe that the mechanism of surface-contact grinding is same to the general grinding. In the surface-contact grinding, processing forms, contact state, material removal mechanism are different from the general grinding, therefore, the processing mechanism is also different greatly. This paper mainly takes honing for example and develops preliminary study for the material removal mechanism of surface-contact grinding. The main research work as follows.This paper takes honing stone for example to develop the simulation of abrasive tool surface topography, and this is the bssis of follow study. In the work of simulation, this paper takes the cosine function to characterize the shape of the abrasive surface and binder; uses random distribution and normal distribution to determine the diameter and spatial position of abrasive. The result of simulation is closer to reality, and convenient to obtain the data.This paper deduces the grinding force formula for single abrasive in honing; carries out the experiment for grinding force. And then we make use of the experiment data, the theoretical formula and the simulation result of honing stone surface topography to determine the constant coefficients, and calculate the grinding force of single abrasive in machining. Experimental results show the force is little.Discuss the material removal rate formula of honing, design and carry out of the experiment on workpiece material removal rate and oil stone wear rate under different processing parameters, and this is the main content for the mechanism of material removal. Through the experiment, we find the bigger reticulate pattern angle become, the bigger workpiece material removal rate and oil stone wear rate become.This paper believes that surface-contact grinding exists non-continuous cutting phenomenon and the whole cutting process is the integration of continuous cutting and non-continuous cutting; proposes that the Bauschinger effect take important effect in material removal of surface-contact grinding, and the presence of Bauschinger effect will accelerate the material removal efficiency. These assumptions were verified by the experiments in this paper.
