Polystyrene (PS) because of its excellent performance, widely used in all walks of life. However, polystyrene is flammable, easy to produce melt drop, and has high consumption calorimetry, high flame temperature, high burning speed, and produces large amount of smoke and toxic, and so on. So this kind of material in case of fire, the fire hazard is relatively large, which limits its application in the field of requiring fire protection to a certain extent. Therefore, the study on fire retardant PS has become the most important issue to achieve the purpose of building fire and electrical safety.To analysis the mechanism of PS/MH/MRP, This article consists of the following parts:1. Preparing of PS/MH/MRP fire retardant system, and changing the ratio of MH/MRP, while keeping the fixed total amount of flame retardant. Comparing the limit oxygen index, vertical combustion, tensile strength, bending strength, TG and other test results, To choose one of relatively good comprehensive performance. The result showed that the LOI of PS/MH/MRP is 25%, and its UL-94 is Vo, when the ratio of MH/MRP is 2:1.2. Changing the fixed ratio of MH/MRP, and keeping the fixed total amount of flame retardant found that fire retardant performance is in an overall increases, with increasing of fire retardant. While mechanical properties shows the opposite law. When coupling agent is not higher than 60, LOI increases faster, while mechanical properties decrease less. After more than 60, LOI improves slowly, and the mechanical properties are severely damaged.3. Silane coupling agent KH-550, KH-570, aluminum acid ester coupling agent HYA1, titanate coupling agent HY201 Respectively modified MH/MRP complex fire retardant, and Changed the amount of coupling agent from 1%to 10%, to compare the influence of coupling agent types and the total amount. Coupling agent can improve the mechanical properties of the material, and there is no significant influence on the combustion performance. When the coupling agent is 2%, doing the TG test and the cone calorimeter test for PS、PS/MM and C-PS/MM, which further showed MH/MRP play a significant role in the fire retardant, and significantly reduce the amount of smoke, which is conducive to the fire escape and reduce the fire hazard.but coupling agent can not fundamentally improve the fire retardant efficiency.
