The Application Of Patchwork Art In Modern Costume Design

Patchwork art is a traditional handicraft that put odds and ends of cloth into new patterns and materials, which is originated from the folk. Wildly circulated in various countries around the world, it has now developed into an art form. As there are various kinds of expressive forms based on the different colors, textures and techniques, the Patchwork is of boundless charm. With an overview of the current research on Patchwork, we can find that many theses and treatises are about the Patchwork history and specific skills, while few of them is about the development of the current Patchwork and the innovation on fashion design. Therefore, this paper, starting from the situation of the three well-known international Patchwork exhibitions, conducts a research on this topic with illustrations, with various methods like looking up documents, field visit, analysis and comparison, etc. According to this research, we find that Patchwork art is the bottomless inspiration source of modern fashion design on one hand. Specially, the Patchwork of Chinese minorities can better embody the valuable asset of the national cultures, in line with the current concept of sustainable development. On the other hand, the application in fashion designs can also be a kind of protection and inheritance to the traditional Patchwork art, requiring more designers to contribute attention.
