Dolomite which with great economic value is an important source of magnesium mineral, and it is widely distributed, rich stored, and easily exploited in our country. Using cheap and readily available dolomite to prepare nanometer MgO not only can meet the demand for high-performance nano-materials, but also can make full use of mineral resources. In this way, the economic value and use value of dolomite can be realized. With the development of economy and technology, using dolomite resource to produce high value-added products has been received increasing attention.Nanometer MgO possesses some particular properties, like surface effect, quantum size effect and macroscopic quantum tunneling effect, which make it different from traditional materials and make it with wide range of use. Nanometer MgO can be used in various fields, such as ceramic materials, refractory materials, medicine, health, paints and cosmetics.By using dolomite as raw materia, nanometer MgO was prepared by the method of ammonium sulfate and hydrothermal treatment. In the paper, the effect of digestion ratio, digestion temperature, digestion time, the amount of ammonium sulfate, extraction time and the amount of ammonia to magnesium extraction rate were all discussed, and got the best condition of preparation for nanometer MgO.It was found that high active MgO could be prepared in water for 55 min at temperatureof 60℃ with digest ratio of 1:40, and an excess of 50% ammonium sulfate leach 40min.The influence of the hydrothermal treating temperature, time, hydrothermal solvents, surfactants, pH value on the morphology and size of nanometer MgO were studied.Eventually we got a thickness of 60 nm, a diameter of 200 ~ 400 nm nanometer MgO,which have low specific surface area and favorable dispersibility.
