The development history of electrochemical cell and its work principle and composition were summarized by referring to the relevant literatures and books in this thesis. The types and present situations of alkaline zinc batteries were emphasized. The electrochemical properties and problems of the zinc electrode in alkaline electrolyte were also analyzed. The present main electrode additives and electrolyte additives were introduced. Based on these works, a new inhibitor benzimidazole was chosen as the electrolyte additives. The electrochemical behaviors of zinc electrode in alkaline solutions were researched. The organic compounds benzimidazole was used as the corrosion inhibitor of zinc electrode in KOH electrolytes. The effects of benzimidazole on the electrochemical behavior of zinc electrode in KOH electrolytes were researched by the weight loss tests, cyclic voltammetry curve tests, electrochemical-impedance tests and the potentiodynamic polarization curves tests. The main research conclusions were as follows:Benzimidazole was an anodic inhibitor. At the room temperature, benzimidazole could inhibit the corrosion of zinc electrode in KOH solution after its concentration was bigger than a certain value. Its corrosion inhibition efficiency became stronger as its concentration increased. The concentration change of benzimidazole could cause the change of the properties of the adsorption layer. The effect of temperature on the corrosion inhibition efficiency of benzimidazole was tested. The experimental data showed that the effect of temperature on the corrosion inhibition efficiency of benzimidazole was weaker. Benzimidazole could form a stable adsorption film on the surface of zinc electrode and blocked the contact between the corrosive ions in the solution and the zinc electrode. The corrosion process of zinc in KOH solution was been changed so that the corrosion of zinc electrode was inhibited.
