Plunge milling is called Z axis milling. It can rapidly remove large quantity of material, and it's one of efficiency methods in milling. It's fit surface milling of hard materials, Slot Milling and machining when the tool length longer. Plunge milling is more efficiency than end milling in usual used. The application of plunge milling technique is becoming extensive due to its unique characteristics and theoretical maturing in recent years.The domestic study on plunge milling is almost limited to applied territory, and few study on interrelated mechanics. The method of plunge milling is not popular at present. The study on theories and experimental research on plunge milling certainly will grow people on comprehension of its operate modes, and drive its application on mental cutting.In this paper, the theories with regard to plunge milling are discussed on the basis of experiments. It includes:(1) The operate modes of plunge milling are described; the characteristic of plunge milling are summarized; the domestic research results on plunge milling are summed up as well as overseas.(2) The milling force and surface roughness in plunge milling are analyzed. The model of cutting force is set up on the basis of cutting scrap.(3) The experimental programme is designed. According to the performance of plunge milling cutter as well as the work piece material, the consumption of milling adopted in the experiment is determined. The platform measuring the force of plunge milling and surface roughness is built up.(4) The experimental data of milling force and surface roughness are dealt with.(5) The thin-wall part is plunge milled experimentally to show the virtue of the plunge milling.The model and empirical equation of milling force gained from this experiment and the discussion about the theory of surface roughness have the meaning of guidance to the practical application of plunge milling.
