As the decrease in oil and gas production from land and maturity in offshore oil and gas exploitation, the global offshore oil industry is building production equipments in even deeper water, greatly promoting the current technologies and extensively adopting the new technologies. These movements make up the general trend in the offshore oil and gas industry.For any kind of floater concepts, risers, the critical parts in offshore infrastructure, are always necessary for offshore oilfield development. Offshore drilling is the first step in offshore oil and gas extraction, and the offshore drilling riser is the key equipment of offshore oil and gas exploration and production. Both drilling ship design and offshore oil field exploration program are directly affected by the design of drilling riser. Therefore, the research on the deepwater drilling riser technology has a great significance to improve our ability in deepwater oil and gas exploration and production.In this paper, the deepwater drilling riser technology features are discussed with typical environmental data from South China Sea. According to the relevant drilling riser design rules and analysis methods, not only marine drilling riser concept design and analysis work are carried, but also different design proposals are compared, so that the optimum design could be determined. Below are the main tasks:1. The flow velocity and soil P-Y curves of South China Sea are calculated based on the environmental conditions of South China Sea and its particular internal waves;2. According to rules and theoretical calculations, the preliminary design of drilling riser system is conducted, which includes calculating minimum wall thickness and determining the materials of drilling riser;3. Applying ABAQUS finite element software, the entire drilling riser system is modeled to study the overall layout proposal and determine the performance data of various components. Followed is the optimum design through comparing different design proposals; 4. Applying vortex-induced vibration analysis software SHEAR7, drilling riser vortex-induced vibration is analyzed, which includes calculating fatigue damage and fatigue life caused by vortex-induced vibration, and whether to install vortex-induced vibration suppress devices;5. Following the equipment selection for the drilling riser system, an outlook of drilling riser system localization is presented based on the inquisition of domestic and foreign drilling equipment market situation.
