Vortex induced vibration(VIV) is one of the important factors lead to the structural instability and fatigue damage. In practical engineering,to ensure long deepwater risers safety and structural instability,in order to find a good method to suppress vortex induced vibration of deepwater risers.Experimental investigation was performed by testing a riser without VIV suppression and with three controlled rods.Different velocity of flow, two different inflow directions and different tension were covered in the test. Results such as Root mean square Strain, model weight, frequency and displacement standard deviation were studied comprehensively, though it did not change the dominant frequency of response apparently. The results of tests show that the controlled rods can be effective in suppressing VIV of marine risers, and this kind of suppression has a good ability to work well in different inflow directions.
