As technology developing, more and more electrified device is applied to all kinds of fields such as producing, living, researching and so on. The sudden going out of the electricity will result in data losing, machine malfunctioning and other serious problems. The birth of UPS is the best solution to those problems. UPS is the short form of Uninterruptible Power System. It's an important device which provides continuous, stable and uninterruptible power supply. It gives us extra time to save significant data or shut down machine even when the electricity goes out.Batteries are the heart of UPS. It's said almost 30% breakdown of UPS results from batteries'failure. The battery-management system secures the whole pack running stability of UPS.This paper, firstly, introduces the topology of the main circuit of UPS and how every unit works. It analyzes performance and parameters of every part, especially the charging-discharging management unit.Secondly, it analyzes the charging-discharging principle of Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid (VRLA) batteries. Based on their charging-discharging feature and traditional three-phase charging mode, this paper adopts the newest and most effective mode, PWM mode, to charge/discharge batteries. After lots of comparison, we decided to use TMS320F2812, a fast DSP of Texas Instrument Corporation, as our MCU. It makes the intelligent charging-discharging management of batteries come true.Thirdly, the paper introduces all auxiliary functions, such as the detection of voltage and current, malfunction alarming, alarm confirming and anti-EMI measures and so on. Also it explains how the DSP converts analog signals to digital ones, gets data and acts according to the corresponding data.At last, the paper summarizes the achievements of the experiment, the still existing problems and the solutions to them by the analysis of experimental data, waveforms and program.
