Application Of Postmodernism In Chinese Landscape Architecture

With the rapid development of economy and material life of great wealth, more people began to pursue spiritual life. Especially in the 20th Century 90's, to further enhance our socio-economic levels, all levels of society began to pursue the higher spiritual of landscape. At present, the focus of social and economic structure shifted from production to consumption, entering a consumed era. People began to pursue high quality of life, culture and the spirit of good eco-environmental quality. Gardens have already been an important part of cultural activities. No longer satisfied with the basic functions of gardens, people started to pursue the cultural significance and geographic features and the spirit and significance passed to the public. China's specific social and cultural ideas, concepts, ideals sufficiently reflect in the contemporary gardens. In the trend of globalization, through the information media and foreign organizations'design practice in the country's landscape, the western postmodernism began to impact on Chinese gardens, which enriches the landscape planning and design style. But in our field of landscape design practice widespread anomie style to follow suit and value of the phenomenon, from the "reference form" to "copy form", to the neglect of our own local culture and landscape history, so people with the traditional separation of the geographical space, geographical garden culture gradually disappeared, resulting in a Chinese garden design values chaos. We must examine the post-modern garden design ideas and methodology that was born in the context of the western unique socio-economic and cultural, apply them into Chinese landscape architecture based on Chinese economic culture and form our own postmodern landscape architecture design theory to guide the practice.Based on analyzing and sorting out the former literature, this thesis generalized both the source and the development, made a conceptual definition of "postmodernism" and "Postmodernism Landscape Architecture" and also proposed four factors influencing the development of contemporary Chinese Landscape Architecture: the impact of Western ideas, technology development, human individuality and problems about the deterioration of ecological environment and the development of Chinese landscape architecture. On this basis, beginning to research on the values, causes, creative ideas, essential characteristics of the Western postmodernism landscape architecture, then summed up that the Western postmodernism landscape architecture used semiotics and semantics as a creation methodology and designed the garden as ideographic, narrative, accounted history and culture, the expression of local characteristics and performance of the public aesthetic symbols. Based on study of the nature of the western postmodernism landscape, , according to environmental behavior psychology, environmental perception theory, Gestalt psychology, landscape aesthetics and contemporary theories of public values, combined with China's historical and cultural backgrounds, contemporary public garden aesthetic characteristics and traditional Chinese landscape gardening thinking. The dissertation brings out that application of postmodernism in Chinese landscape architecture design should be followed planning principles and creative expression methods. Finally, through the analysis of the actual projects, summarized and verified the theory, the dissertation made the conclusions more operational.
