Research On The Design Theory Of Postmodern Landscape Architecture Based On Semiotics

Based on the Kuhn' s theory of Paradigm, the thesis puts forward the definitions of landscape architecture design paradigm and landscape architecture design theory, re-defines the definition of postmodern landscape architecture and its classification system. Taking the postmodern landscape architecture based on Semiotics as the research object, the thesis discusses the main design styles, ontology, concept of value and design skills of postmodern landscape architecture based on Semiotics with research approaches such as cultural criticism, value criticism and Semiotics, analyses the influential factors such as cultural basis and social background.Since 1900' s, the extreme development of western countries has caused many grave consequences such as world war, the alienation of science, technology and human beings, which gave rise to the crisis of society, culture and faith in I960' s. Therefore, the value system of modernism was doubted by people and begun to lose its effects. In the field of landscape architecture, modernism in landscape architecture, centered by the value system of modernism, taking the mechanical world outlook as basis, the humanism as center, space as main factors, form following functions as design principles, seeking scientific, economical and efficient ways, was doubted as same as modernism. Influenced by postmodernism, the modern landscape architecture changed its position and turned to postmodernism. According to the difference of value concept, postmodern landscape architecture can be divided into three types: deconstructive postmodern landscape architecture, reconstructive postmodern landscape architecture and constructive postmodern landscape architecture.Postmodern landscape architecture based on Semiotics is a branch ofreconstructive postmodern landscape architecture. Influenced by Hermeneutics, it took in the value concept of modernism in landscape architecture critically and formed a value system which rejects rationalism, subjectivity, objectivity opposite frame and anti-alienation of human beings; pursues expression of multi-meaning and taking spectators as center, restoring the human scale of landscape architecture, succeeding to traditional culture and historical resources; shows concern for people' s existence situation.Influenced by the world outlook of Semiotics, postmodern landscape architecture based on Semiotics re-explored the essence of landscape architecture, set up the new landscape architecture outlook—taking landscape architecture as sign, which can be divided into five types: landscape architecture as meaning-expressing sign; landscape architecture as a sign telling the story of nature, culture and history; landscape architecture as a sign expressing culture and history; landscape architecture as a sign expressing regional culture; landscape architecture as sign expressing mass culture. All of which try to take the understanding activity of landscape as a basic existence mode of human being, try to restore the human scale of landscape architecture separated by modernism in landscape architecture.Postmodern landscape architecture based on Semiotics takes Semiotics as its methodology. According to Semiotics, the sign of postmodern landscape architecture can be divided into three types: icon, index and symbol. According to the differences between style, function and sources, its icon has three types: historical icon, regional or local culture icon and mass culture icon. Among them, symbol has three types: common meaning-expressing symbol, narrative symbol and color symbol. With the theory of Semiotics, postmodern landscape architecture based on Semiotics, by using these symbols, designs and creates its works, which are feeling, reasonable and easy to understand, dialogue.In the process of design, postmodern landscape architecture based on Semiotics often combines with Gestalt psychology to design landscape sign.
