Research on connection modes of municipal distribution networks can be described as an optimization problem with multi-objectives and uncertainty actually. The difficulty in determination of network structure is how to determine connection modes, number of optimal sections of lines as well as the location of switches. They should adapt to progressive development and the increasing demand of loads in cities, and meanwhile satisfy requirement of power supply reliability.Based on Guangzhou 10kV distribution network, this paper analyses and compares connection modes of this distribution network in terms of reliability and economy in depth. First of all, it evaluates the reliability of various typical connection modes such as 2-1, 3-1, two supply and single auxiliary, three supply and one auxiliary. Computational models to compute reliability indices such as ASAI, SAIFI, SAIDI, ENSI and CAIDI are established. Reliability of each typical connection mode is compared and analyzed. Economic assessment of each typical connection mode used in this paper is conducted and the computational model of total investment is established and investment of each connection mode is compared. The optimal connection mode corresponding to different load density is obtained from point of view of the reliability and economy. Preliminary investment fee is estimated based on the municipal 10kV distribution network connection modes. Simulation of number of the optimal sections of typical connection modes corresponding to different load density is conducted and hence the number of optimal sections for overhead lines and cables is given respectively. Furthermore, a computational software for reliability assessment and optimization of the connection modes of municipal 10kV distribution network is developed based on these research results, which consists of three modules such as original data input, reliability and economy assessment and graph output of computational results.
