Due to absorbing excessive earthquake energy,some members in traditional structures may enter into elastic-Plastic state ,even yield or fail under strong earthquake,with a consequence of repair failure later or direct collapse. Dampers added to structures are responsible for consuming energy introduced by earthquake or other dynamic inputs. The Supplemental energy dissipation systems can be used to control story drift,improve or upgrade the structural seismic performance of new or existing building. This technique has been becoming one of the main tendency of earthquake-resistant engineering research. Scholars and engineers of this domain in many countries are being engaged in this field of research and practice.Hysteretic energy dissipaters possess easy-to-get materials, cheap cost and good endurance. The main objective of the thesis is to study the effectiveness of hysteretic dissipaters, especially the new type of mild steel damper.Main efforts has been done as follows:1. The history and methods are introduced, especially the classification and the application of the mild steel damper.2. Four kinds of new type mild steel damper are putted forward based of the previous studies. First, the finite element calculation parameters are verified through the existing experiment. And then, analyzed the mechanical properties of the new type of mild steel damper.3. The macro calculating unit - spring unit was established for the new type of mild steel damper as the finite element calculation ABAQUS provides a simplified unit; The installation method was discussed , especially how to effect the energy dissipation by the support's tectonic and stiffness .Biased the calculation we saw the knowledge of the previous literature for the support had something wrong and that is not good for its'promotion. Based on the research of the simplified model, a kind of simplified calculation unit was build for the structure that with the new king of mild steel damper and then made a calculation for the structure.4. In order to research the energy dissipation of the mild steel damper, the calculation about the structure's eigenvalue and the elastic-plastic time-history analysis of frame structures in earthquake response was took using the finite element calculation ABAQUS.
