Indoor particulate matter is a significant contributor to sick building syndrome (SBS). One of the most effective ways to control the indoor pollutant exposure is using air cleaner. In this study, both measurement and computational fluid dynamic(CFD) modeling have been carried out to investigate the effect of three different ventilation modes such us mixing ventilation (MV), under-floor air distribution (UFAD) and displacement ventilation (DV) on ionic cleaner which installed in the inlet.A simulation on the characteristics of rooms airflow,temperature and the dynamic process of anion concentration among three ventilation modes was conducted by using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) program. The numerical results show that anion distribution is directly influenced by the airflow. The anion within MV room is much evener, and in DV room, the ionic concentration is stratified obviously. Compared to MV and UFAD rooms, the anion in DV room has a stronger impact on control the pollutants from indoor lower position. When the ionic cleaner operates intermittently, the air cleaner in DV rooms requires the shortest boot time. And for the new decorated buildings, the anion in DV rooms can fully reduce the pollutant from wall, floor and ceiling etc.In addition, the effect of ionic cleaner from three conditions was investigated in the man-made climate laboratory. The particle concentration downtrend was compared when operating the ionic cleaner before and after. The results reveal that the agglomeration of anion and small diameter particles is particularly significant. It has a positive role on human respiratory diseases. In DV system, the particle removal efficiency of ionic cleaner is the highest, and the purification is the most obvious.
