With the development of the power industry, multi-level and multi-area interconnected power system has been formed. Large-scale power grid interconnection achieved resource sharing, to a greater extent to meet the requirements of operational flexibility, reliability and economy on the power system. The available transfer capability between the areas of electric power system is an important basis to determine whether the power grid is for security and stability. Plenty of available transmission capacity can reduce the occurrence of network congestion and ensure smooth power transactions. The flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) is an effective means to improve the available transfer capacity. Static Synchronous Series Compensator is a type of series compensation of FACTS devices, based on the inverter technology, mainly used in series compensation of the transmission line. SSSC can be equivalent to a synchronous voltage source of which the magnitude and phase angle can be adjusted. Changing the effective impedance of transmission lines by adjusting the amplitude and the phase in order to achieve the control of the power flow in transmission grid. This article describes the basic concepts of power system available transfer capability, gives the definition and calculation framework of available transmission capacity. Basing on Static Synchronous Series Compensator establishes the available transfer capability calculation of optimal power flow model, introduced the power injection model of SSSC device in the model, using the original dual interior point method to solve the optimization problem. To determine the location of the installation, make the use of characteristic structure analysis, according to the sensitivity coefficients between the minimum modulus characteristic structure analysis and control variables to select the most suitable installation position. Taking IEEE-30 bus system to carry on simulation analysis, the results demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.
