The major accidents of soil instability collapse in the field of geotechnical engineering are the issues of the plane strain deformation localization. Through the physical and mechanical properties in a plane strain stress state, Plane Strain Tests supply the reasonable mechanical parameters for the engineering design and numerical calculation, and predict and analyse the practical engineering problems Although the study of the test method develop many years ago, it is not fully mature.Relying on the image measurement technique, New Plane Strain Apparatus is designed to study soil conditions in the plane strain deformation characteristics, and observe the testing process of the formation and the development process of shear band location, discuss the formation mechanism and find the conditions for the phenomenon of shear band location, which is expected to realize the soil constitutive and draw the significance conclusions for the engineering building.Based on the existing plane strain test equipment, the new plane strain apparatus in soil test is developed. Its main characteristic is that the square flexible pressurized capsule is used in the principal stress in the direction ofσ3 to realize the process of automatic control.The live plate design in the direction of stressσ1 makes the axial force measurement more accurately.The application of digital image measurement technology can study soil samples of deformation and shear failure process better, which can share with triaxial loading host.In cording to the functional requirements of New Plane Strain Apparatus, the mechanical design of device has been finished, It is mainly including base plate, the window components, lateral load components, flexible pressurized capsule, axial load components, samples components, gusset plate components and so on. loading host realize load control function according to the function requirement, Relying on the digital image measurement, the system realizes the measurement of radial and axial deformation in the same time, and the control system design is finished based on the requirment of measurement.
