Entered 2010, auto sales hit a new high record in March and April in our country. The popularity of cars became faster and faster. Especially in China, which was still only 30 cars per thousand persons, whether considered from car sales or the need for cars of the people, the potential in the growing number of cars was enormous. However, according to China's national condition, more people had less lands, the growing number of cars put pressure on traffic. In particular the pressure on urban traffic was increasing, the delays of traffic in the city became longer and longer. These years, our country invested huge funds,manpower and material resources in road buildings whether in urban or rural areas, and many major cities tried various ways to reduce the congestion of traffic. But all these ways could not solve the problem effectively. So, more and more researchers engaged in studying the traffic signal control systems. We hoped we can realize intelligent traffic signal control on urban road ways and highways through our efforts.In view of the present status of the traffic in our country, we studied on urban arterial traffic signal control. Firstly, the basic theory of traffic signal control is discussed. And compared several typical traffic signal control systems in the world. At the same time, compared several typical methods for forecasting the short-term traffic flow, analyzed their respective advantages and disadvantages. Then, researched on the artificial immune clone selection algorithms which were popular at present. And a scheme of applying artificial clone selection algorithms to optimize the urban road traffic signal control systems was proposed based on the research. Then, simulations based on artificial immune clone selection algorithms was performed, which were on the traffic signal of a single intersection and an arteria included three intersections before optimizing and after optimizing. The results of the simulations were compared too. By comparing the delay time before optimizing and after optimizing, it was obvious that the delay time could be greatly reduced by using the clone immune selection algorithms to control the urban arterial traffic signal. So the urban road traffic was smoother. Finally, the hardware design was fulfilled.Although the research was based on the simulations in this paper, traffic signal optimized control could be realized in practice with the efforts of more and more researchers. And the research could be extended to network traffic signal control from city to city.
