HVDC system in China developed rapidly, it is important in our national network project and send power east to west system. Due to its structure, the basic principle and fault type are different from AC lines,location method has its particularity. Reliable and accurate fault location plays a very important role in reducing the power loss,ensuring supply reliability,improving power system stability and economic security. Therefore, the search for high-precision DC transmission line fault location method is an urgent problem to solve.The transmission line transient traveling wave generating mechanism and characteristics, has laid a theoretical foundation for the DC transmission lines transient wave generation and extraction. Based on the DC transmission line analysis, the effective location of signal extraction and processing, recording means were proposed. This paper discussed the basic principle of fault location and method, analyed various factors of fault location reliability and accuracy, and proposed effective means of its improvement.analyzed the method of fault location under the influence of thunder wave; under network mode, through the fault information with time reference from the relative substations, which formed the redundant fault location, this way further improved the reliability of the fault location; using real-time operating system, FPGA and other new technologies, achieved several continuous, non-dead records, improved the reliability of fault location; analyzed the influence of traveling wave head,speed on the distance, then gave ways of improvemen.Against long HVDC transmission lines,the traveling wave fault location system was designed,besides,the functions and principles of the components was analyzed.Using GPS time synchronization system as locating system time source,and through the field data collection of "Yun nan-Guang dong" DC transmission line fault location system,to analysis the accuracy of distance measurement.
