Three-way catalytic converter used in automobile exhaust purification has a widely prospect. The catalytic converter consists of metallic honeycomb substrates and ceramic honercomb substrates. Compare to ceramic substrates, metallic substrates has many advantages, such as high opening rate and relative surface ratio. However, owing to high cost of manufacturing and complexity of process, the application of metallic honeycomb substrates is restricted.The forming methord and manufacturing process of S-type metallic honeycomb substrates is studied. Detailed deduced the equation of structure and parameter of s-type metal honeycomb substrates, such as opening rate, specific surface area and S curve, etc. This paper presents a new-forming method for S-type metallic honeycomb substrates. The force model for summation of flat sheet and corrugated sheet is established when coiling. The size of central cell and the flatness of the end of metallic substrates are both important parameter of metallic substrates. The factors which influence it is also analyzed. While the span between two shafts is decreased, the size of central cell will decrease. While the diameter of coiling shaft decrease, the the size of central cell will decrease. While the thickness of the summation of flat sheet and corrugated sheet decrease, the the size of central cell will decrease. While the length of inner core decrease, the flatness will decrease. When the diameter of coiling shaft decrease, the flatness will decrease. The paper also presents a new manufacturing process of S-type metallic honeycomb substrates. Automatic coiling machine is designed to manufacture S-type metallic substrates, and it can improve production efficiency.After pressure-deformation experiments, the stress-deformation curve of the summation of flat sheet and corrugated sheet is aquired. Through the experiments which is base on automatic coiling machine, we can aquire the coiling parameter of several metallic substrates and the optimal ratio between actual length and theoretical length of the material is also determined.
