In this paper, load frequency control (LFC) problems for power systems with time delays and deregulated multi-area power systems are studied.First, stability of LFC for power systems with time-varying delays is analyzed based on networked control system (NCS) theory, and state feedback LFC controllers are obtained using linear matrix inequalities (LMI) method. This strategy avoids the conservatism of the methods disregarding the delays, and is simple to implement. Then the general transfer function model of LFC for deregulated power systems is derived, and an IMC-PID method is used to design the load frequency controllers. The performance and robustness of the resulting PID controllers are only related to two tuning parameters. Finally, the proposed method is applied on a four-area power system under various operating conditions. Simulation results show that the system performance is significantly improved by the proposed controllers.
