In general, tribology is the science about friction, wear and lubrication. Energy consumption is caused by friction, wear and tear is one of the three main forms of failure for mechanical parts, while lubrication is the most effective measure for reducing friction and controlling wear. A reasonable lubrication design is of great significance to energy conservation, reducing raw material consumption, extending equipment life, improving their reliability and etc. The studying of lubrication theory is a basis for reasonable design, but different friction pair has different lubrication mechanism. In order to study lubrication theory of point-contact friction, CAD, mechanical principle, mechanical design, the inverter, sensor, RC test parameters, other aspects of knowledge and equipment have been used in developing the rotating point-contact friction and wear tester and its testing system. The testing machine is directly drived by motor to make the sample rotate to simulate the relative movement of friction pair, and the using of guide and the slider mechanism, the structure of the machine is compact. It is easy to operate and could be adjusted in the three-dimensional space. The testing system, consisting of hardware components, the controlling and testing tasks is completed by three subunits: Inverter is used in adjusting the speed; load is collected by the pressure sensor system and real-time display; the testing unit of RC and the computer can obtain oil film instantaneous resistance signal acquisition, conversion and storage. A lot of lubrication experiments have been carried out under light load and low speed conditions. The results show that speed and load have different roles on the formation of oil film, and among them, speed has more significant influence. With the change of speed and load, the lubrication mechanism of friction pair also changes, it is show that the experimental system can be effectively measured the change of lubrication under different conditions.The rotating point-contact tribometer in this paper runs smoothly, reliable, and the data obtained are accurate. It can satisfy lubrication test of point-contact friction pair under light load, low speed conditions. All achievements associated in the paper are valuable for the deeper experiment on the point-contact lubrication and for the further research on the lubricating design.
