| In past architectural researches, study about planting design in classical Chinese gardens is always a weak point. Although scholars from phytology and landscape architecture have studied classical Chinese gardens from their point of view, tectonic of planting design is rarely mentioned. In the documents of classical Chinese gardens, documents that written in Ming and Qing dynasty, the importance of planting in a classical garden is always mentioned. This essay is trying to study the tectonic of planting design in classical Chinese gardens, using trans disciplinary methods, based on previous studies in both architecture and phytology field.The essay focuses on studying private gardens in south of the Yangtze River built in Ming and Qing dynasty. The study is going to explain the tectonic of planting in the gardens though two levels, which are JIANG and YI.The fundamental level is JIANG, which is building technology. In this part, the essay tells the basic methods of planting in private gardens in south of the Yangtze River during the period. Firstly, the essay talks about the usage of planting in classical Chinese gardens. Secondly, the essay introduces the master layout of plants in the gardens. Furthermore, the essay discusses planting design methods in detail.A further level is YI, which basically means idea. YI pushes the planting design of gardens from technic level to humanism level. The research starts from studying the culture meaning showed in the nature qualities of the plants. Then, through the study of the influences from ancient Chinese poems and paintings, the research discovers the humane properties of the garden's planting design.At last, the essay tells the background and meanings of tectonic by combining the two concepts that are JIANG and YI. The leading factors of the tectonic of the garden designing in Ming and Qing dynasty are the interests and attitudes of the scholar-bureaucrats. Their design principle is acting according to the circumstances. |
