In the north of China, such as Heilongjiang province, the ice period may be above half a year. The impact force between ice sheet and pier is big in every spring thaw. Sometimes the force even damages bridge structure and cause serious casualties. For this reason, specific research into impact effect between river ice and pier is necessary in Heilongjiang province. This work and research is of great significance for correctly understanding the relevant factors which affect the impact force, for guaranteeing the safety of the structure and for lowering the project cost.This paper summarizes the research situation of impact effect between ice and structure, introduces the computational theory of numerical simulation and analysis on ice sheet impacting pier. Through applying this theory, with LS-DYNA, build the finite element model of ice sheet and pier. Then discuss ice failure mode appropriated for this issue, and analyze the relationship between numerical simulation accuracy and finite element mesh size, contact type, region partition of ice sheet. Afterwards the model was optimized and then verifed. Finally, based on this available model, this paper discuss the relationship between ice pressure and the strength, modulus of elasticity, flow velocity, plan view size, thickness of ice sheet. Then the relationship between ice pressure and the closed angle, inclination angle of cusp shape ice apron and the relationship between ice pressure and curvature, inclination angle of bow shape ice apron are analyzed.Analysis shows that for the issue of river ice impacting vertical pier, the river ice is crushing, and the principal tensile stress failure criteria could be applied. The numerical simulation accuracy is affected by the size of ice sheet in near region, by mesh size, by contact type. And the relationship between ice pressure and the strength, modulus of elasticity, thickness of ice sheet is linear. But in a certain range, the relationship between ice pressure and flow velocity, plan view size is not obvious. For cusp shape ice apron, the ice pressure is increased as the closed angle or the inclination angle increased; and for bow shape ice apron, the ice pressure is increased as the curvature or the inclination angle increased.
