The iceberg in the river will bring very huge dynamic ice force and impact force. The iceberg will strike the ship and building, which will cause the block of the navigation in the winter and the damage of the hydraulic structure. The iceberg will also affect the safe operation of the hydraulic structure and endanger the downstream. Therefore it is necessary to make a research about the interactivity between the iceberg and structure. There are some forms of failure of the ice, which conclude crushing failure, bending failure and flexural failure. The ice force of the extrusion failure is the biggest, so the crushing failure of the iceberg with finite element method is studied. The present research state of the ice problem is reviewed. The form of failure and constitutive equation of the ice is introduced. The calculation formulas of ice load are summarized. The project example and the physical model experiment is introduced too. ANSYS/LS-DYNA is famous finite element analysis software. The finite element model of pier and the ice sheet is established. The failure criterion of the ice is that the contact region of will fail after a certain elastic deformation. The model of ice also concerns about the crushing strength, the thickness and the velocity of the ice sheet. The result of the calculation contains the ice force-time curve and the response of the pier. The ice load coming from finite element method is compared with the result from the code and experiment. The rule of the ice load is summarized when the thickness and the velocity of ice is different. The computation and analysis show that the software ANSYS/LS-DYNA could model the crushing failure of the ice sheet. The ice force-time curve, the stress distribution in the ice sheet and the response of the pier will be got easily.
