As a way of electric propulsion, pod propulsion system has been used for many years, especially on the types of ships such as passenger vessels, ice breakers and engineering ships. It receives good reputation for its excellent performance. Ssp pod propulsion is a branch of pod propulsion. In this paper, a simple ssp pod electric propulsion model with DC drive system is designed for project demand.In the beginning, this paper first reviews the development history of ship electric propulsion, analyses the ssp pod electric propulsion model with DC drive system and then introduces DC speed control technology and PLC control technology.Analyse the principle and characteristic of speed control of DC motor, selection of the motor, the method of DC speed control, and then compare performance of some speed control methods.Analyse the principle and characteristic of PLC, introduce the selected type of S7-200 and its expanded module.This paper designs a plan of the ssp pod electric propulsion model with DC drive system based on PLC and DC speed control which satisfies the project demand. According to this plan, this paper finishes the hardware design and software design of the control program. The hardware includes S7-200 PLC, expanded module, detective sensor of pod location, detective sensor of rotating speed of the motor. The software design of the control program includes the control program of rotating direction of motor, rotating speed of the motor, detection of the pod location, and anti-interference, achieves rotation control of the pod, detection of the pod rotating location, control of rotating speed and direction of the motor.In the end, this paper summarizes the work, and prospects for future work.
