The collapse of the houses is responsible for the earthquake, which is the main reason of heavy casualties and huge property losses. Since 12 May 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake, the research of seismic performance of housing has been further attention. The post-disaster survey found that 80,000 people were killed,1.8 million people were missing,16 million houses were collapsed and most of them were rural residences. In China, the heavy casualties caused by earthquakes occur mainly in rural areas, the basic cause is that all the collapsed houses are in the majority of masonry structure, further more, the leading structure form of housing in rural areas is mainly masonry structure. On the one hand, the economic condition in rural areas is relatively poor, the cost of frame building with good seismic performance is too high; on the other hand, to build a masonry structure house can use the local materials and with low cost, which is the most widely used structural type in rural residential, and there will still be a large number of masonry structure houses in a period of future. However, masonry structure is a brittle structure with low tensile,shear capacity and poor integrity and deformation performance; under the action of the strong earthquake, it is prone to brittle shear failure and its seismic capacity is poor, for which the rate of damage is higher than other type buildings during the earthquake, which subjects to its use in certain restrictions.Therefore, in view of the specific national conditions, to improve the seismic performance of masonry structures is a long-term study.The research project related to this article is "The seismic fortification research of Wuhan rural dwellings". The structural types of rural housing structure in Wuhan City is basically the same as other rural areas in China, the main house structure is brick structure. Wuhan City is not in the earthquake zone, but there are so many lakes and weak foundation soil, which is very detrimental to anti-seismic.This paper makes a finite element analysis of this city's typical masonry structure under earthquake, simulates the collapse process of masonry structure under strong ground motion, gives the proposal to enhance the seismic performance of masonry structure. This paper makes the following arrangements:(1) Overview this research's background and summarize domestic and foreign scholars'research status on the collapse simulation of masonry structure. (2) Analyze the progressive collapse and part damage mechanism of masonry structures, to proceed on this basis to survey the seismic situation of rural residential areas in Wuhan City, and propose specific seismic recommendations.(3) Select reasonable and effective method and calculation software based on the awareness of the collapse simulation of masonry structures; introduce the calculation methods and the principles of the process of structural collapse simulation of ANSYS /LS-DYNA software.(4) Use the finite element software ANSYS/LS-DYNA to simulate the collapse of masonry structures with and without the tie columns and perimeter beams, analyze the collapse process and characteristics comparatively.(5) Summarize the role and significance of the tie columns and perimeter beams for the seismic performance of masonry structure houses.
