Column base is the very important joint between the steel structure and the concrete foundations. Embedded steel column base is widely adopted in high-rise steel structures. But up to now its performance under earthquake excitation is still not known very well. China in-force national design codes are established referring to limited our own and Japanese studies on middle column bases. There are also significant differences among China national specifications. The research of shallowly embedded column base is very few. Therefore, it's necessary to carry out some foundation research on behavior of steel column bases.Based on the available research results, this paper proposed a theoretical model to evaluate the strength of an embedded column base for corner columns, designed the test specimens and predicted their behavior. Based on the test results of two embedded cornor column base specimens, the paper made some analysis and research to recognize the rigidity, ductility, capacity and mechanism of this type of column base, and some suggestions for engineering design were given as well.Beside this, a new type of column base was presented in this paper which is semi-embedded reinforced by bars or stiffener. According to the analytical model, three specimens of shallowly embedded column base are designed and a test plan is proposed. Now the loading test is not finished because of the schedules.
