Research Of Cave Dwelling Renovation In Gulled-Hilly Area Of Loess Plateau In South Part Of Shanxi Province

Cave dwelling is one kind of traditional Chinese housings which is specially located in Loess Plateau areas; it not only owns history of centuries-old, but also has the advantage known as 'warm in winter while cool in summer'. However, with the economic and social development, the progress and innovation of construction techniques, this kind of traditional housing is on the margin of elimination.This study points out that the renovation of the old cave dwellings has both theoretical and practical meanings in solving the housing problems of rural residents, to reduce the occupation of cultivated land, to save energy on building construction, to reduce construction pollution, as well as to protect the traditional housings. Started from the history and the geographical distribution on the evolution of cave dwelling in Loess Plateau, based on the current study outcomes from Shaanxi, Henan, Gansu and Shanxi provinces, it points out that the underdevelopment in these areas is also an important reason that why the cave dwelling is still been used.This study is focused on old brick and stone cave dwellings built in 60's and 80's of the 20th century in Sanhou Town Ji County, Linfen City of Shanxi as the research object. Through the actual renovation project, it analyses the measures, means and costs. In the end it testifies that whether local government or ordinary families can afford the renovation of the cave dwelling.This article is divided into seven chapters:the first chapter is the background, purpose and significance of this study, including methods and ideas, the problem to be solved.
