As the main bearing component of building—columns, the strengthening method of column has an important significance to the research. The strengthening of existing methods needs to be improved. A method for strengthening eccentrically compressed concrete columns with steel bars /wire mesh (SW)mortar was proposed in this thesis. An experimental study was carried out.It was expected that the large diameter bars could greatly improve the bearing capacity of the columns, superior decentralized of wire mesh could guarantee a better co-work of large diameter bars and wire mesh, and also enable the strengthened columnts to have better ductility and durability. The experimental study was divided into two parts.a. Behaviour of SW strengthening circular columns under eccentric load.22 circular concrete columns strengthened by SW and steer bars (S) were produced and tested under eccentric loading.The effect of the eccentricity (small) was studied. The results show that, the eccentricity has a significant effect on the ultimate bearing capacity of each strengthened column. Both S and SW methods can not improve the ductility effectively under small eccentric compression. The ultimate bearing capacity of SW obtains a larger increase than that of S .The measured ultimate load of the SW column is much higher than the calculated value by using the code formula.b. Behaviour of SW strengthening square columns under eccentric load.According to the different eccentricity, a total of 16 square concrete columns strengthened by SW and S mortar were produced and tested under eccentric loading. The results show that, the eccentricity has a significant effect on the ultimate bearing capacity.The bearing capacity and ductility of SW mortar strengthened square concrete columns have a certain increase.
