The Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) is a kind of vehicle which is controlled by radio remote control equipment or the control program of its own. The UAV has many advantages, such as wide usage, low cost, cost-effective, no casualty risk, ease of use and so on. As a result, the UAV plays a very important role in modern warfare and is widely used in civilian area. But as flight mission becomes more and more complicated the requirements on the control system becomes more and more strictly. Therefore, an improved lateral control system of UAV is developed in this paper.A kind of UAV has been studied in this paper by using MATLAB as the research tools. Firstly, the control requirement of different flight segments has been studied. Then, the general plan of designing and validation has been made base on it.Secondly, the nonlinear models of three wheels taxiing segment, two wheels taxiing segment and flight segment have been built in MATLAB/SIMULINK. Then, the linear model has been built by using the linearization method under small perturbation. Besides, base on the mathematical model, the characteristic of the UAV and the impact caused by lateral disturbance has been investigated.Thirdly, considering the features of the air-flight segment, three kinds of anti–disturbance lateral control system has been developed and the final lateral control system has been determined according to simulation result. Considering the futures of the landing segment, a high-precision lateral control system has been designed base on the control requirement of different landing segments. When the control system has been designed, the robustness in time domain and frequency domain in the whole fight envelope, simulation and robustness verification under the influence of interference factors has been analyzed by using nonlinear model.Lastly, the performance of the improved lateral control system has been simulated in the whole fight envelope on the FCC-Win simulation platform. According to the simulation result, the control performance of the anti-disturbance lateral control system and the high-precision lateral control system is good, and the improve lateral control system can be used on the true UAV.
