Buried pipeline system is one of the most important lifeline system. In the modern society, buried pipeline is the important infrastructure to transport water, natural gas, petroleum, heating and so on. As a long span structural system, the pipeline system is usually built across different geological and geographical zone. It is very important how to improve seismic capacity of the pipelines system and ensure the normal performance of pipelines system.Firstly, earthquake damage characters of buried pipeline are analyzed in details based on historical seismic data, and the influencing factors of earthquake disaster characteristics of buried pipeline are also discussed.Secondly, common seismic isolation device in structural engineering works is studied for the purpose of analyzing the seismic wave response of the buried pipeline, and by referring to the results, isolator models of buried pipeline subjected to seismic wave effect and faulting are developed for studying its seismic isolation behavior.Lastly, the factors influencing the seismic damage resistance capability of buried pipeline are investigated, including the stiffness and dampness of the seismic isolation system, and the seismic responses of buried pipeline with and without seismic isolation system are also studied. The results show that changes of both the stiffness and dampness have evident effects on the seismic isolation capability. The stiffness has to be as small as possible but must be reasonable so that it will not cause a tension failure of the pipeline. The value of the dampness is supposed to be in accordance to that of the stiffness, because a too big or too small dampness will have little effect on enhancing the seismic isolation capability. Alleviating the interaction between the pipe and the soil can cause a great reduction to the responses of pipeline, thus increasing the seismic isolation capability. The effect of seismic isolation device is only notable when subjected to certain types of seismic motions.
