Nowadays in Chinese industrial fields, there are a lot fans and pumps which can be retrofitted with frequency variable converter so as to save energy. But lack of standard converters especially for these application, which need converters directly used by end user in China mainly. In this paper, combining the frequency converter development project involved, the author deeply analyze and study on the frequency converter hardware design, software design and tests, , including their driver circuits, protection circuits and comprehensive design. In hardware design author detailed describe the power module selction in main circuit and its impact to the converer. The low inductance design, design for 480V/60Hz power supply, common AC bus bar scheme are discussed. Also it is described how low voltage frequency converter meets category 3 Emission limits. And then the selction principle of input and out reactor for converter is mentioned. In software design several functions developed especially for fan and pump application are explained. Based on these features the optimized design scheme and competitive product can be provided to customer to realize energy saving and less emission finally.The main study method and creativity of frequency converter development project which author involved recently are to provide key-turnover standard converter after widely summarizing the requirements of fan and pump application in China, taking into consideration of the square torque, linear torque and other variable torque load characteristics. As well to define every feature and structure of converter based on the situation of energy-saving retrofit site.Improvement and optimization many times according to the results of comprehensive and strict tests, at last the converter series were developed which can meet related international and domestic standards. Following two tough tests will be detailed introduced in this paper:EMC test compliance with C3 category and type test compliance with GB/T12668.2 standard.
