Rem Koolhaas is one of the most famous architects nowadays, and he's also a highly controversial man, as a result of his advance pioneering architectural thought, and his works that always present an incredible experimental posture. Koolhaas has his own unique architectural thought. In his opinion, modern architecture has come to a point where a reform must be made urgently, and more innovative architectural forms must be sought to response to the changing world. Meanwhile, under the impact of globalization and market economy, cities become similar day by day, with the trend of collapse, and then buildings are considered as containers that would accommodate the culture and function of the cities. The contradiction between the limited volume and the unlimited expansionary contents of buildings is an influence factor of the development of architectural forms. By resolving this contradiction, Koolhaas'works explore the new forms of architecture, which is just the thing this thesis is to analyze. At first the thesis introduced Rem Koolhaas's biography and the forming of thinking model. Then according to his books, the thesis had a detailed analysis of the forming process of Koolhaas's thought and his several major architectural and urban theories, such as―Culture of Congestion‖,―Generic City‖. Combining with the analysis of Koolhaas's works, the thesis respectively had two parts to discuss the two design concepts which are city mimesis and architectural mutation, looking for the theory osculation among his works. City mimesis had an analysis of Koolhaas's works according to the function and the route of buildings, while architectural mutation according to the mutation of form, function and shape. At last, Combining with the contents of the preceding part, the thesis demonstrated the inspiration and reference of Koolhaas's architectural thought for Chinese architects, pointing out the impractical parts for China's national conditions, and summarized Koolhaas's prospect of the architectural future.
