Natural ventilation results in no pollution and energy-cost. Chimney effect is a kind of efficient method of architecture natural ventilation. Chimney effect in buildings can force air flow in particular path and drive waste hot air out with thermal pressure, thus improve air quality. This paper consists of theoretical analyse part and experimentation study part. The theoretical part analyses the formula and examples using Chimney effect, which cataloged by wind environment, region and climate, architecture form. This part summarizes the crruent apply of chimney effect in buildings. The experimentation part processes two experiments: The first experiment is based on the project of Shenzhen Huayu ecological experiment building, which emphasizes on study of different heat-driven ventilation effects caused by different parameters (height, Cross-sectional area, position and area of inlet) and wind pressure. The second experiment is based on the glass chimney of school of architecture and urban planning in HUST(Huazhong University of Science and Technology), which emphasizes on study of heat-collecting material effect to the heat-driven ventilation. The experiment measures the temperature and wind speed of the measuring points in the chimney, and concludes the feature of phenomenon when parameters change. The results of the experiment are contrasted with related ventilation standard to examine the validity of chimney effect. The first experiment proves that the chimney design can meet the needs of ventilation standard, and the chimney can meet the ventilation needs for 27 m2 to 165 m2 area. The second experiment proves that if the 0.9m×0.6m cross-section chimney is higher than 6m, it can behave more efficiently with heat-collecting material in hot days.According to ventilation standard and experiment data, the author calculates the supporting area of each single chimney, which can be helpful to heat-driven natural ventilation tower or pipeline design. At the last, the paper concludes the feature of chimney effect, and gives some suggestion at how to improve the effect of heat-driven natural ventilation from three aspects: chimney parameters, wind pressure, architecture and environment design.
