The history of world automobile industry has been more than a century. The advent of the automobile promotes greatly the progress of human society and the economic development. China's automobile industry started in the 50s of last century. After the reform and opening up, especially in the recent years, our country's automobile industry has developed very rapidly. Both car's production and marketing have exceeded 13 million. The motor vehicle brings us a lot of benefits. However it also uses up too much oil and discharges a large amount of pollutants. Facing the increasingly serious resources and environmental problems, people are going to demand much higher and higher to the environmental characteristics, security and comfort of automobiles.To install the auxiliary braking equipment——retarder, can effectively improve the safety and security of automobile, decrease the traffic accidents caused by the failed or invalid braking. There are mainly current eddy retarder, hydraulic retarder and permanent magnet retarder. At present, it's a hot research area to recovery energy on a basic of auxiliary braking. The common technologies of receiving braking energy contain: flywheel energy storage, hydraulic energy storage and electrochemical storage which is the most widely used. The method of electrochemical storage usually adopts one motor which can transfer the kinetic energy to electric energy. Then the electric energy is saved in the battery.A kind of energy recovering retarder with single-phase and reluctance construction is designed in the dissertation. It adopts a single phase switched reluctance motor (SRM) as the integrated-motor-and-generator and is installed between engine and transmission. It is a parallel hybrid electric equipment in essence. This energy recovering retarder have different working mode: one is auxiliary braking mode in which the auto's kinetic energy is received; The other is electric power driving mode in which the battery supplies electric power and the retarder, working as a motor, provides driving power together with engine.Based on the theory of SRM and the project's detailed information, this dissertation introduces the single-phase-4/4-pole retarder's structure design, model machine's processing and assembling, relevant experiments, etc. For the single phase SRM's particularity and the request of retarder's working mode, a simple feasible controlling method is put forward. The retarder's bench test has made significant progress based on abundant experiments. This kind of energy recovering retarder has many advantages: simple construction, easy controlling, high power density, etc. The overall design method of the project has certain innovation and some referential value for the development of similar technical product.
