With the development of science technology, the technique of metro train auxiliary inverter develops rapidly. So do the power electronic devices on the inverters. Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT) has taken place of the early device such as thyristor, power thyristor and Gate Turn-Off thyristor (GTO).There had been a high failure rate on AC01/02 train auxiliary inverter system since the trains came into the commercial service in 1999. A14 module failure is one of the major faults among all auxiliary supply system faults on the train. Each car is equipped with an auxiliary inverter whose power device is intelligence power module (IPM) and the inverter is module type structure.The paper aims the analysis for the root cause of A14 IPM module failure and the disadvantage of the origin IPM at the high failure rate of A14 IPM damage, based on the character of the IPM and the actual technical requirement of the train. Meanwhile, the different performance between IGBT and IPM is compared by the simulation analysis of the A14 module. Therefore, IGBT is proposed to replace the IPM module.The Research for IGBT Replacement of IPM Module is based on the selection of electric performance and dimension, the design of protection circuit and drive circuit. The selected IGBT has better electric performance than origin IPM. The collector current and short circuit character is strengthened, the drive circuit is designed, the protect circuit is optimized and the temperature protect module is improved.Eventually, the IGBT replacement module passes the validation and operation test which proves it satisfy the design requirement.
