As the rise of living level, the requirements of people on precision, speed and environment-protection of mechanical properties are higher and higher, which asks professional personnel, based on the market request, apply modern design methods including modular design, standardization design, robust design, reliability design and life-cycle design and can propose solutions of design of mechanical products.Mechanical design has been changed from mainly relying on one self's experience to what is now a process which depends on computer technology, modern design methods, standardization, industry regulation and so on. Experience design relies heavily on designers'personal experience and level, causing enormous waste of production materials. Modern design methods have characteristics of diversity, functionality, efficiency and so on. This paper researched one of modern design methods, robust design and the main contents are the followings.1) In order to improve the market competitiveness of manufacturing enterprises, propose a design method of reducing cost of products. The requirements on energy conservation and emissions reduction of manufacture industry are more strongly in the society. Robust optimization cost design can let enterprises reduce the production cost through replacing current equipment parts by more cheap ones, and at the same time the product function will not be affected. Based on a full understanding of mechanical products, adopting the robust optimization cost design can relax the requirements for the accuracy of components or parts.The linear problem is the basis of the nonlinear problem. This paper firstly reviews the linear engineering model robust design, and then proposes a method which can reduce the cost of products under the condition of having gotten the relationship among variances of quality characteristics and input parameters. Get the optimal combination of input parameters. It not only guarantees the current product quality, but also reduces the production cost through loosening requirements to the accuracy of input equipments.For the nonlinear engineering model, ensure product performance unchanged or even improved. Through Taylor expansion get the exact relationships among parts tolerances, design parameters and quality characteristics variances. Using the optimization tool MATLAB get greater allowed design variances of components or parts. Then work out the precision of components according to their variances. In light industry machinery products, coating equipment occupies an important position. Use the robust optimization cost design to realize the target of energy saving. In the design of the coating head, based on mastering the inner mechanism and the robust optimization cost design, relax the tolerance requirements to each roller and driven precision.2) Improved the analytical robust design method and supplied a solution for robust design of implicit function engineering models. Based on relationships between quality characteristic parameters and design parameters, the relation among product performance fluctuations variances, design parameters and their variances has been established. Realized robust design of products and improved their quality. In the real world, engineering model may be of implicit function. There is a requirement that asks functional requirements be equal to the number of original engineering models. Using mathematical method, calculate the expressions of function characteristic parameters variances and constraint conditions. At last obtain a method for robust design of implicit function engineering models.
