Wind power is a promising green energy that is renewable and environmental friendly. The growing utilization of wind power places higher requirements on wind power generation technology, in which experimental verification is an essential part. However, real wind farms are not available in most laboratories, so on-site experiments can not be easily carried out. Therefore, replacing an actual wind turbine with a wind turbine simulator to establish an experimental platform in the laboratory will facilitate the research of wind power generation, so it is of practical significance. In the study, Doubly Salient Electro-magnetic Machine (DSEM) is adopted to establish the wind turbine simulator. The output torque of DSEM is controlled real-timely to emulate the torque output characteristics of an actual wind turbine and drives a Doubly Salient Electro-magnet Generator (DSEG) to form an experimental platform in the laboratory. In order to realize convenient parameter adjustment and rapid strategy verification, semi-physical simulation technology is adopted. dSPACE real-time simulation system is seamlessly integrated into MATLAB/Simulink and has good real-time performance. So dSPACE is chosen as the core controller of the wind turbine simulator. The graphical MATLAB/Simulink models can be compiled and downloaded directly to dSPACE real-time hardware to drive the wind turbine simulator.Firstly, the concept of semi-physical simulation and dSPACE real-time simulation system are introduced. Then the basic theories and torque closed-loop control strategy as well as its MATLAB/SimPowerSystems model are presented. Based on the simulation verification, a wind turbine simulator using dSPACE DS1104 is designed and introduced, including the hardware system, the rapid control prototyping model and the ControlDesk testing environment design.Experiments are carried out under the ControlDesk environment. Experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the wind turbine emulation strategy. The wind turbine simulator and a DSEG constitute a flexible experimental platform for future research of wind power generation technology in the laboratory.
