With the energy crisis growing, renewable energy has attracted more attention.As a kind of renewable energy, wind energy obtains more good graces for its clean,abundant and recyclable. The most widely application channel of wind energy iswind power. As a carrier for wind energy applying, the study for aerodynamicproperties of wind turbine has become a focus on the wind power field. Based onthe 5mΦVertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWT) from U. S. Sandia Laboratories, thepaper uses Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) method to analyze itsaerodynamic performance and compare with the blade element momentum theory.The main contents of research are as follows:First, analyze the movement and force on theΦ-wind turbine according to theblade element momentum theory. Combining stream-tube model, obtain the windpower curve through calculating the wind energy utilization under different tipspeeds with the soft MATLAB. This is used to provide a contrast with the CFDmethod.Second, according to the basic theory of CFD method, analyze theaerodynamic performance of the airfoil NACA0015. Apply CFD software FLUENTto obtain the airfoil lift coefficient and drag coefficient curve under different anglesof attack. The velocity flowline map for flow field of the airfoil can also beacquired.And then, use the CFD method to simulate the flow field for wind turbine.Mesh for the wind turbine with the soft GAMBIT,and read grid file into the softFLUENT. Obtain the wind power curve through calculating the wind energyutilization under eight different tip speeds. On the standard of experimental values,The CFD method is more accurate to predict wind energy utilization by comparingthe results from CFD methods with blade element momentum theory.Finally, Based on the equatorial circle cross section on the wind turbine, Usethe CFD method to analyze the variation of wind energy utilization when the airfoilchord, blade number or types of airfoil changes.The result of this thesis is possessed of good engineering value, and providinga new method to predict the aerodynamic performance of VAWT.
