Theater is generally built for arts performing and appreciation. The spatial structures and functions of a theater should satisfy the needs of various users, including the viewing experience of the audiences, and the process of performing arts, etc. For a long time, however, performing technics design, has been ignored in the architectural design of theaters, leading to irrational functions of theaters,as well as inconsistency between the technics design and in-service use.As one part of the Post Occupancy Evaluation of National Centre for Performing Arts, this thesis focuses on the following aspects: requirements of the staff and performers, and the spatial and facility requirements of the performing arts. We investigate the utilization of NCPA's performing area and provide reports of evaluation and suggestions as the references for improving structures, facilities and management. The scope of POE research covers space, functions, and facilities of the performing area.Performing area includes Stage Section and Backstage Section. First, on the basis of performance evaluation of stage space and equipments, the assessment of Stage Section is conducted in Opera House, Theatre, Concert Hall and MF Theatre, respectively. Second, the evaluation of Backstage Section space relies on the variety of its functions, including performers'activity area, transportation and storage, and staff offices and VIP rooms.Based on the analyses of investigations and data, this thesis probes into the following three important correlations: between various performing arts and stage space, between stage facilities and architectural space, and between performing area and its users'behavior patterns. The POE results are available for NCPA managers, we believe they are useful to comprehend users'demands and promote management of space and facilities. This thesis provides a new method for POE on performing area of theaters.
