As an important symbol of human culture, the development of theater has beeninfluenced by performing arts, theater technology and the social environment. Under thenew era background, the boundaries among performing arts are becomingvaporous, various kinds of art forms learn and mirror from each other. To some degree, professional theaters can not meet the different needs of spacesfor different art forms.Theater revolution is imperative under the circumstance ofimperious market management. Epoch demands high-yielding theatrical space whosetechnology is more developed, whose functions are more manifold and whose spaces ismore adaptable. This paper is based on the process of practice in Tsinghua Institute of ArchitecturalDesign. By studying the designing work of the new media theater in Huairou Film base,an intensive discussion of the space design has been argued based on spatial interfaces.Firstly, this paper analyzes the different demands towards theatrical space forvarious art forms.By comparing and analyzing the relevant cases,it concludes thetheatrical relationships and spatial characteristics in different theaters and point out thepossibility of their transform. Then, come up with the necessary requirements andrelated problems, crystallizing the core problem to be solved in designing flexibletheaters. On this basis, do an intensive research on the transfer of stage forms and spacerelationships based on spatial interfaces.By studying some key technological problemssuch as theater technology, flexible chairs, and movable partition, the adaptability of thecore space in a theater is discussed in this paper. The author raised the design rules offlexible theater design and apply it to the practical projects in Huairou Film base.Briefly, on the basis of cases and technology, this paper tries to draw some generalconclusions which can be references of flexible theater design.
