Forcusing on the ductile seismic design of the high rise buildings in the seismically active areas, the american authority published some importantly creative design documents of guide in views of the capability control under different levels of earthquake. These are quite valuable for improving the capacity design of seismic high -rise buildings in China. Accoring to the requirement that author`s team gives some suggestions to the Chinese structure seismic design code, the reseach in this paper has been arranged to finish 3 parts of work as follow:â‘ Summarizing the new achievement of the american academia and creattica in the field of the high rise building capacity design based on the codes like IBC 2009 ASCE 7-05,ASCE/SEI 41-06, and generalizing the clue and feature of the design principle, even the experience obtained via the practice after understanding several design codes and guide specifications of the new generation from the american west coast.â‘¡Based on the comparison between chinese and american design code about the frame structure done by the author`s team, this paper compared the specifications about the shear wall given in chinese and american seismic codes. Moreover, the elastic analysis and section design was made on the first leve concrete frame-shear wall structure according to the chinese code and the samples were checked in the light of the related specifications in the american code where the design seismic group is Intensity 8 with 0.2g of seismic acceleartion..â‘¢The non-linear dynamic analysis for the samples mentioned above with a few inputs of ground motion was finished and the evaluation on the shear amplify factor suggested in chinese code was done based on the analysis of shear capacity according to the non-linear acceptance criterion in rare earthquake given by the"Seismic Design Guidelines for Tall Buildings"published by American PEER.The conclusions can be obtained by the work above as follows:â‘ The american traditional codes consists the traditional specifications and gives the possibility to choose some other codes at the same time. The design codes and guide specifications of new generation from the american west coast cities represent method of the capacity design and offer the guidance to the high rise buildings seismic design which exceeds the limit of the traditional codes. The contents that can be learned by China are:1) Investigating at least two performance objectives explicitly and establishing quantitative acceptance criteria for performance based seismic design of high-rise buildings:frequently earthquake and rarely earthquake.2) Deaggregating the ground-motion hazard for the interesting hazard level at the structural natural periods of interest, identifying the relative contributions of various seismic sources, earthquake magnitudes and distances to the computed ground motion, and using the results as the basis for selecting representative accelerograms for response history analysis.3) Based on various seismic sources, earthquake magnitudes, distances to the computed ground motion and ground motion attenuation, forming the Conditional Mean Spectrum which preserves realistic spectral shapes for controlling earthquakes as a result of target ground motion intensity measure.4) Because the behavior is nonlinear, behavior at one hazard level cannot be scaled from nonlinear results at another hazard level. Furthermore, conventional capacity design approaches can underestimate internal forces in some structural systems (and overestimate them in others) because lateral force profiles and deformation patterns change as the intensity of ground shaking increases. Consequently, three-dimensional nonlinear dynamic response analysis is increasingly utilized for performance based seismic design of high-rise buildings in America.â‘¡There is the specification of bottom strenghening zone for shear wall in the chinese code defining the depth of the bottom restrain edge element as a constant which is proportional to the hight of the structure. This specification is obtained by the experiment results, seismic and engeering practice experiences and drawing on the related foreign codes. There is no specific concept of bottom strenghen zone in american code and the setting of the restrain edge elements is based on the sectional stress calculation.â‘¢The inelastic dynamic analysis indicates that the shear value of the wall is a little larger in the rare earthquake ground motion. It could be the reference for chinese code to determine the shear amplify factor of the shear wall after collecting enough analysis results.
