Exhaust muffler is the most effective way of reducing vehicle exhaust noise. Due to design theory at present wastes a lot on simulation analysis and experimental verification and lower the efficiency. So to develop an expert exhaust system which is able to shorten the development circle and reduce development costs is quite necessary.Aiming at conquering the defects of traditional design method, intelligent technology is raised to solve the design problems in the process of exhaust muffler design. Then the total frame and basic functions are accomplished with the help of based reasoning. What's more, the key technologies have been deeply studied and the corresponding practical solutions have been brought about. In the end, the exhaust expert system is developed based on VB.NET platform which attains the goal of intelligent design of exhaust muffler.The key technologies included in the system are as follows: (1) Fast modeling method is raised based on parameterized modeling technology, and then the work of feature extraction and parameterized expression is completed. Eventually, based on image processing interface, an efficient tool of modeling for muffler is developed to realize the notional design of muffler. (2) The specific semi-structured data management method is developed due to the particularity of the data. Then the semi-structured case library is created. With the assist of expert knowledge, the information library data management system is developed to provide as efficient interface for case data by WinSock. (3) Taking the extreme situations that may occur in the process of intelligent reasoning into account, data error or data loss, for instance, the proper solutions are presented. Meanwhile, the reliability of reasoning is assessed by specific formula. In the end, the intelligent reasoning of exhaust muffler case coupling is realized based on related evaluation system.The results derived from the paper can not only provide lots of academic basement and design methods with the intelligent development of exhaust muffler, but also be referenced and directive meaning to other automotive components design.
